Chapter Thirty-Three

When I woke up again everything was a blur and my mind was fuzzy. The only thing I knew was that I was still in the hospital. I took inventory. Let’s see -- I’m alive? I must be, because I was still in pain, although much less than before. I was shot? Yeah, now it was coming back. I’d been shot in the chest. I sent up a little prayer of thanks to God and the taxpayers for the bulletproof vest. Without it, I would have died in the street. My arm was still in the brace, so I couldn’t have been out all that long. I remembered a doctor telling me he was going to put me in a coma so my heart could recover. Was it better? Waking up like this -- did that mean I was going to make it? I could breathe more easily. Where is everybody? Much like the time before, I was not sure if I should raise my hand up to see if there was a hole in my chest. I felt like screaming but was unable to muster up the energy. I finally did get my free hand up to my chest, and everything seemed intact. At least there was no hole in my chest. What the fuck happened to me?

After what seemed like hours, a nurse finally walked in. I asked her, “Where the hell am I?” in a voice gravelly from disuse.

Startled, she looked at me like I was a ghost, then grinned excitedly. “Welcome back,” she said. “Let me go tell the doctor you’re awake.”

I asked in my gravelly voice, “Where the hell am I and how long have I been here?”

“Let me get the doctor so he can answer your questions,” she said as she hurried out of the room.

“No, wait!” I said, but she was already gone.

A rather tall, very large doctor walked in. He said, “Glad to finally meet you. My name is Dr. Schmidt. I’m a hospitalist, which means I manage your care in the hospital and bring in other specialists as needed.” He asked me my name and birthdate, and then asked, “Can you tell me what today’s date is?”

I said, “Last I knew it was the 4th of July, but I remember another doctor telling me I would be sedated for a few days.”

“Well, you’ve been out for a while. A week and a half,” said Dr. Schmidt. “Your chart says you had a blunt force trauma to the sternum, causing acute cardiac injury. You were put in a medically-induced coma to allow for recovery.

“We tried to pull you out of the medically-induced coma once it was no longer necessary for cardiac purposes, but your brain stayed in a state of coma for a few extra days. I’m happy to see that you’re back and lucid.”

I spoke angrily to the doctor, “I really need you to tell me what the date is today.”

He said, “The date is July 15th, so you’ve been here for 11 days.
